How often do I need a vehicle inspection?+
Both Virginia and New York require annual vehicle inspections. Your vehicle must pass inspection every 12 months. In Virginia, the sticker expires on the last day of the month it was issued. In New York, the sticker typically expires on the last day of your birth month.
What does a state vehicle inspection check?+
State safety inspections generally check brakes, tires, lights, steering, suspension, mirrors, windshield, wipers, horn, exhaust system, and seat belts. New York also includes a mandatory OBD-II emissions scan for vehicles 1996 and newer as part of the standard inspection.
How much does a state inspection cost?+
In Virginia, the maximum safety inspection fee is $20, set by the state. In New York, there is no state-set maximum for the safety portion — the emissions test fee is set by the station and typically ranges from $21 to $37. Call your local station for exact pricing.
What happens if my vehicle fails inspection?+
In Virginia, a rejection sticker is issued and you have 15 days to repair and return to the same station for a free re-inspection. In New York, you receive a 10-day extension for repairs — re-inspection at the same station within 10 days is typically free, or you can go to a different station.
Are new vehicles exempt from inspection?+
Yes, in both states. Virginia exempts new vehicles for the first 2 years (24 months) from the title date. New York exempts new vehicles for the first 2 years from the original registration date.
Does my state require an emissions test?+
It depends on your location. In Virginia, emissions testing is only required in Northern Virginia localities — Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and Stafford counties, plus cities within those counties. In New York, emissions testing (OBD-II scan) is part of every standard inspection for vehicles 1996 and newer. Vehicles 1995 and older, diesel vehicles over 8,500 lbs GVWR, and electric vehicles are exempt from the emissions portion.
